New Delhi (24/03/2023): At the inaugural Policy Next-The Rs 10 Trillion Infra Push summit in New Delhi on March 23, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the lithium find in Jammu & Kashmir will help lower the cost of making electric vehicles (EVs) in India.
Lithium deposits were discovered in the Reasi region of Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Geological Survey of India (GSI), marking the country’s first discovery of the metal, which is an essential component of batteries.
Lithium inferred resources amounting to about 5.9 million tonne (MT) are thought to be a game-changer as India presses for EVs to reduce pollution and its oil bill.
At the Summit organised by MoneyControl, Nitin Gadkari said, “We can reduce the cost of electric vehicles if our lithium will be available and we will be the number one manufacturing hub in the world.”
One of the primary causes of EVs’ excessive cost is their expensive batteries. In order to increase the popularity of EVs, the government and EV manufacturers are searching for ways to lower the price of batteries.
According to Gadkari India currently imports 1200 tonnes of lithium every year and the J&K ore would be very helpful.
