Kolkata, 05th July 2023: The authorities at the Loreto College in Kolkata have announced a withdrawal of a policy that prohibited admission to students coming from schools where Bengali was the medium of instruction. The policy also prohibited students from having other languages to seek admission to the undergraduate courses.
This comes as in its first merit list for admission to seven BA and BSc honours programmes, the students with ‘vernacular’ mediums of instruction in class XII would not be considered. The move sparked outrage among the students and the people who immediately called the move discriminatory and also held rallies and protests outside the college.
As a response to the issue, Calcutta University registrar Debasis Das stated that the institution does not allow affiliated colleges to frame such discriminatory rules and also to discriminate based on an applicant’s medium of learning.
He also added that the University registrar summoned the college authorities and that the college ended up apologising and confirmed that the admission policy would be revoked.
