New Delhi (28/02/2022): Higher voter turnout indicates a throbbing democracy, while lower participation is a sign of apathy towards incumbent government. Many political analysts feel that voters aren’t stepping out to vote because they aren’t very satisfied with the incumbent government and they neither feel comfortable about voting anyone else.
Another visible trend that’s giving sleepless nights to the legislators of the incumbent government is the higher voter turnout in the districts where anti-BJP sentiments were pretty palpable. For instance Lakhimpur Kheri and Pilibhit, two districts in the Terai region, record the highest turnout in phase four.
Many also feel that price rise, unemployment, communalism etc also played major role in surging a sentiment against the ruling party. Expressing such opinion, a voter from Azamgarh said, “Inflation is a big issue for us. This government is doing a lot of Hindus-vs-Muslims. We want this to end. We want to live peacefully with our Hindu, Sikh, and Christian brothers and sisters. If the SP government comes to power, we will be able to live peacefully,”
However, if one talks to people from the majority religion, the view is completely different. Abhishek Mishra from Lucknow says, “I may have hundred complaints with Yogi government, but at least in this rule I can live peacefully and don’t have fear while stepping out late at night. The lawless state that existed some years back is now a thing of past and no one wants to bring that back. So even if I’m angry with BJP, I will never vote for SP. There is just NOTA or BJP for most of UP voters.”
