NEW DELHI (20 March 2025): M Ramachandran, the former Secretary of Urban Development in the Government of India, was honored with the prestigious Bharat Samman Award at the Sorbon International Convocation 2025. The event, which took place at a grand ceremony, celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields, and Ramachandran’s dedication to public service was acknowledged with this esteemed recognition.

M. Ramachandran, during his address as a guest of honour at the Sorbonne International Convocation 2025, spoke about the newly launched Book – Revolution in Banking – Authored by Dr Nirmal Bansal and Dr Suneel and Published by Adhyan Books. He highlighted that the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of banking sector over the years, tracing its evolution from key milestones such as nationalization to the integration of digital technology in the sector. Ramachandran said that banking plays a critical role in the overall development of a nation, particularly in today’s context, where it is at the heart of economic growth and financial stability. He emphasized the importance of understanding the dynamics of the banking sector, not only for those directly involved in the industry but also for individuals from all walks of life. The book is designed to serve as a valuable resource for both bankers and the wider community, offering insights into the changing landscape of banking.

Ramachandran also drew attention to the key themes presented in the book, such as financial inclusion, the business correspondence model, and initiatives like the Jan Dhan Yojana. He noted that the Jan Dhan Yojana.

While talking with Ten News Ramachandran expressed deep humility and emphasized that recognition and awards should not be the ultimate goal of anyone’s service or career. He explained that true service comes from genuine dedication to one’s work, without the expectation of recognition. The beauty of this award lies in the fact that I didn’t ask for it. I am here to receive it because it’s a recognition of the work I have done. Awards may not make you bigger, but they help others recognize the impact of your efforts, he said in an exclusive talk with Ten News.

Ramachandran also spoke candidly about his life journey and the principles that guided his career. When you join public service, it is not about personal gain. It is about serving the public. Public service requires you to dedicate yourself to the welfare of others, without thinking of personal profit. If one seeks to make money, they should look to the private sector. But in public service, the aim should always be to serve the community, he stated.

A lifelong advocate for improving the relationship between the government and the people, Ramachandran also authored a book after his retirement, which focuses on bridging the gap between government officials and the masses. Reflecting on his experience of working within the government, he emphasized the importance of understanding the real challenges people face. Sitting in the government office gives a different perspective, but when you are among the public, among the masses, you truly realize the issues they face. Even in this digital age, things are not always as simple as they may seem. I remember an incident when I went to deposit a check at the bank, and the server was down. The staff couldn’t even tell me when the service would be restored. There were workers who had taken half a day off to complete their banking tasks, and they were left waiting without knowing when they could return. This experience made me realize that we must always strive for perfection in our services. If we aim for perfection and ensure that things work smoothly, people will experience satisfaction, and that will bring fulfillment to everyone in public service.

The Sorbon International Convocation, a renowned event, brings together global leaders and achievers to honor individuals who have made substantial contributions to various sectors. This year’s convocation witnessed a diverse group of awardees, each recognized for their exceptional impact on society. Ramachandran’s award is a testament to his lifelong commitment to public service, as well as his continued efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of others, even after his retirement.

Through his insightful reflections, Ramachandran reminded everyone that the real value of public service lies not in recognition but in the tangible difference one can make in people’s lives. His words continue to inspire individuals dedicated to improving the system and serving the community, reinforcing the importance of integrity, service, and perfection in every aspect of life.
