New Delhi (India), May 8, 2023: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the BJP-led governments at the center and in Manipur for their handling of the recent violence in the northeastern state. Banerjee accused the central government of sending numerous teams to Bengal to defame her government whenever an incident occurs there but claimed that no action is being taken in Manipur due to it being a BJP-ruled state.
Expressing concern over the situation, she demanded transparency in reporting the number of casualties, questioning the shoot-at-sight orders and general violence. Banerjee stated that the Bengal government has set up a helpline and is in touch with Manipur authorities to assist those affected by the unrest.
In response to the crisis, the West Bengal government facilitated the evacuation of 18 students studying at the College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University in Imphal, Manipur. These students were brought back to Kolkata with the assistance of the local administration in Manipur, who ensured their safe passage to the airport.
Banerjee emphasized that the evacuation was separate from the one carried out by the Sikkim government, which brought back 128 students from Manipur. The Chief Minister expressed deep concern for the safety of the people of Manipur and other individuals stranded there, assuring that her government is taking steps to provide assistance and support.
Amidst the ongoing violence in Manipur, Mamata Banerjee’s criticism of the central and Manipur governments highlights the political tensions surrounding the issue. Her allegations of biased treatment by the BJP-led authorities draw attention to the broader narrative of regional politics and differing responses to crises across states.
With the West Bengal government actively facilitating the evacuation of stranded individuals, it showcases Banerjee’s commitment to aiding those affected by the unrest in Manipur.
