Imphal, 15th May 2023: The Meitei people of Manipur assembled in large numbers today at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to demand the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), an effort to identify and expel illegal immigrants.
The protestors alleged that the Meiteis who have been living in the Kuki hills are unable to return to their homes after leaving due to threats from Kuki insurgents who are hiding in the hills.
‘The illegal immigrants with the support of their armed insurgent wings have systematically raised atrocities to the indigenous community since 1993 and this should be stopped at any cost,” World Meitei Council chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam announced in a statement.
The Kukis have objected to the Meiteis’ proposal for inclusion in the ST category, claiming that the Meiteis, who are numerically larger and economically stronger, will seize all government benefits and their properties.
