New Delhi, 5th Dec 2024: Prominent pro-social justice leaders, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, came together on Tuesday at the third edition of the All India Federation of Social Justice conference in New Delhi to demand a caste census, the removal of the 50% cap on reservations, and stronger efforts to advance women’s rights.

During his address, Stalin emphasized: “Social justice, secular politics, socialism, equality, state autonomy, and federalism are our objectives. We must unite and fight for these causes.” He also criticized the BJP for linking the women’s reservation bill to the census and the delimitation of constituencies, delaying its implementation until after 2029. “The BJP is creating a false impression that it has brought reservation for women, while the reality tells a different story,” he stated.

Manoj Kumar Jha, Member of Parliament from Bihar, expressed his gratitude to the All India Federation for Social Justice, stating that it is a crucial cause. He shared his experience of conducting a caste-based survey in Bihar, where he highlighted the results and the challenges of getting the government to listen, including opposition from the judiciary. Jha stressed the importance of pushing for a caste-based census across the country and ensuring reservations are represented accurately.

He added, “The inclusion results can never be denied. Civil society and common citizens have taken it up, and we will make sure the government is forced to include the caste-based census all over India. There is nothing sacred about the 50% reservation cap.”

Concluding his remarks, Jha urged the judiciary to prioritize the Constitution and requested that it listen to the people’s needs, rather than the interests of any specific group. “Let’s request the judiciary to listen to the Constitution, not to other gods or the fate you believe in,” he said.

The leaders’ call for action highlights the ongoing struggle for equitable representation and the need for constitutional reforms to ensure social justice for all.
