MoS External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi launches ‘REDIO’, says it will complement Govt’s efforts to help Indian diaspora

New Delhi, 21st Feb: On Sunday, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi launched the Global “Rescuing Every Distressed Indian Overseas” (REDIO) mission in Delhi at the India International Centre.

REDIO is an unique initiative of Movement of Positivity, focused on rescuing fellow Indians overseas under the leadership & guidance of Dr Dnyaneshwar mulay, former Secretary, MEA & Member NHRC.

In her address at the launch event, Lekhi talked about some difficult cases from overseas that the ministry receives on a daily basis which are related to the illegal migration of Indians to foreign countries who then are stuck over there & are unable to connect to the formal setup & are difficult to offer help to as well as she spoke about human rights & cited other cases of Indians in distress, saying that this is where agencies like REDIO come into help.

She discussed a case of an elderly man in his seventies from whom she receives an email every alternate day, whose son in his twenties passed away in a lift accident in Switzerland & the elderly couldn’t get any compensation. Indian/ Switzerland Embassy didn’t give any adequate response on this when Lekhi passed the matter to them because the matter needs to be addressed in the court. “So an agency like REDIO becomes very crucial if they have a volunteer lawyer in Switzerland who understands the system, takes the matter in the court and can get adequate compensation,” Lekhi said emphasizing the necessity of REDIO.

She emphasized, “REDIO needs to compliment & work with the government & enhance & amplify the efforts; you act as a bridge also most of the time it’s not just complementary or supplementary nature of work, it’s even acting as a bridge.”

“Even making people aware of the rights, regulations & helping each other & bridging that gap which a formal system at times cannot take on, the informal can act many a times very smoothly,” Lekhi explained talking of the importance of informal setups.

‘Half of the things you do, you can’t even mention & that’s the job of the government but at the same time half of the job you can not do REDIO will do,” quoted Lekhi in her address.
