Mumbai: Anti-Narcotics Cell seizes mephedrone worth Rs 2 Cr, two arrested

Mumbai, Aug 5 (IANS) The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) has arrested two men and seized 681 grams of mephedrone (MD) worth approximately Rs 2.04 crore in Mumbai.

According to the ANC, the accused were apprehended during a patrol operation at around 10:30 p.m. on August 4 near MHADA Colony Road in Chembur. One accused, aged 33, was found carrying 333 grams of mephedrone, while the other, aged 38, was in possession of 348 grams.

A case has been registered under Sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The accused were formally arrested on August 5.

Police said the total quantity of contraband seized was 681 grams, with an estimated market value of Rs 2,04,30,000.

As per the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the spot panchnama was conducted with videography. Further investigation into the case is underway.

Earlier on July 16, the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Navi Mumbai Crime Branch busted an international drugs cartel and arrested six people from different parts of the state. Around 1,307 gm of hydro ganja and 5 gm of cocaine collectively worth Rs 1.4 crore were seized.

Earlier on May 26, the Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch had arrested three persons after a raid on a residential flat in Agripada led to the recovery of mephedrone and raw materials valued at more than Rs 50 crore, along with a country-made pistol and 19 live cartridges.

According to the police, the raid was carried out on May 26 at Yasmeen Tower, a high-rise building in Agripada, South Mumbai. Acting on inputs received by the Kandivli unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC), the police laid a trap and searched flat number 1004 on the 10th floor. Inside the flat, they found a setup for manufacturing mephedrone.
