New Delhi (India), 3rd April 2023: The New York Times, a highly renowned daily in America, lost its blue tick verification badge on Twitter after declaring it would not pay to stay verified. Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, criticised and bashed the news outlet, labelling its Twitter feed “an equivalent of diarrhoea.”

Elon Musk who is known to make controversial statements and remarks, wrote an entire thread of tweets taunting the New York Times. One of his tweets read, “The real tragedy of NYTimes is that their propaganda isn’t even interesting.”

He added, “Also, their feed is the Twitter equivalent of diarrhoea. It’s unreadable.”Musk’s remarks, however, have not received a response from The New York Times.

The New York Times was one of the news media organisations, businesses, and charities that had already lost their blue tick on Twitter.

After the launch of the subscription service known as Twitter Blue, these organisations would have to pay a monthly fee of $1,000 in the US and $50 for each extra affiliated account in order to keep the gold tick.

The New York Times refused to pay for a verified business account and stated that only journalists who deemed it important for their reporting needs would be allowed to subscribe for a blue tick.

According to AFP, the company’s main account, which has close to 55 million followers, had lost its gold and blue checkmark, but affiliate profiles, like those for its travel and opinion sections, still had the ticks.

LeBron James and other prominent figures from the media who also declared they would not pay for Twitter Blue, but have retained the blue or gold checkmarks on their profiles.
