New Delhi, 30th June 2023: The National Geographic magazine has apparently laid off its final few staff writers and will no longer be available on US newsstands, according to the Washington Post on June 28.

The layoffs affected the remaining 19 editorial staffers, according to the story, and numerous staffers confirmed the news on Twitter.

Craig Welch, one of National Geographic’s now former senior writers tweeted, “I’ve been so lucky. I got to work w/incredible journalists and tell important, global stories. It’s been an honor.”

Simultaneously Journalist Doug Main posted, “National Geographic is laying off its staff writers, including me.”

According to the Post, the organisation’s future editing work will be done by freelance writers and the few remaining editors on staff. However, National Geographic notified media outlets that certain writers will continue on staff.

These layoffs are the second round of employment cuts implemented by the magazine’s parent corporation, Disney, part of cost-cutting efforts. Since 2015, the journal has seen a spate of editorial changes as a result of various ownership changes, including the dismissal of six top editors in September.

In addition, as part of the cost-cutting measures, the magazine eliminated its small audio department. The bright-yellow-bordered versions of NatGeo periodicals will be removed from newsstands beginning next year.
