New Delhi (17 August 2024): On August 9, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was the site of a horrific crime—a woman was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminal hall. This tragic incident has paralyzed medical services as both students and doctors demand justice for the resident PG doctor involved. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called a press conference to address the gravity of the situation.
The RG Kar case highlights two critical issues: the appalling violence against women due to inadequate safety measures and the rampant hooliganism resulting from poor security protocols. The nation is reeling from the shock, with both the medical community and the public feeling the impact.
Demands and Solutions:
Policy Reform: The reluctance to address violence against doctors and hospitals must end. A new Central Act incorporating recent amendments into the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 and updating the 2019 Hospital Protection Bill is crucial. An Ordinance similar to the one during the COVID-19 pandemic may be needed.
Enhanced Security: Hospitals should have security protocols as stringent as those at airports. Establishing hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security measures, including CCTVs and personnel, is imperative.
Improved Working Conditions: The 36-hour duty shifts and inadequate rest facilities must be revised to ensure safe and humane working conditions for resident doctors.
Swift Justice: A thorough and professional investigation must be conducted, with exemplary punishment for perpetrators of both the crime and vandalism.
Compensation: The bereaved family deserves appropriate compensation reflective of the severity of the crime.
In response, the IMA has announced a nationwide 24-hour withdrawal of services by modern medicine doctors, effective from 6 AM on August 17 to 6 AM on August 18, 2024. Emergency services and casualties will continue, but OPDs and elective surgeries will be suspended.
