Newly launched “REDIO” mission a message for the world that India stands for its people: Former MEA Sec Dr. Dnyaneshwar Mulay
New Delhi, 21st Feb: On Sunday, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi launched the Global “Rescuing Every Distressed Indian Overseas” (REDIO) mission.
REDIO is an unique initiative of Movement of Positivity, focused on rescuing fellow Indians overseas under the leadership & guidance of Dr Dnyaneshwar mulay, former Secretary, MEA & Member NHRC.
Dr Mulay, in his address on the occasion, explained about the features, the value additions of this initiative, he also cited some cases of Indians who faced distress while in abroad.
“I do feel this is a historic movement in a sense, this initiative has tremendous potential not necessarily only for the welfare of our people but to tell the world that here is a country which stands for its people,” Dr Mulay said.
“REDIO goes beyond all the boundaries of religion, cast regions & announces that we are only one, we are Indians & we have a duty to our own people who are abroad,” he said.
According to Dr Mulay, In US alone, hundred thousand Indian students are going every year & hence they have made a provision in the ICWF saying that ambassadors must hold one reception every year for Indian students. “We have almost made it compulsory & provided funds in the ICWF,” said Dr Mulay.
Talking of complementing govt’s efforts in helping Indian diaspora, Dr. Mulay said, “We can have a self-sufficient mechanism, independent in terms of looking after the needs of our own countrymen abroad & therefore the effort is to complement the government not substitute their efforts.”
Talking about the value addition that REDIO is going to have, Dr Mulay highlighted, one is emergency help, can’t wait for ICWF. “ICWF have monetary ceilings as well as non-monetary; Missions have limited staff, everything needed by distressed person cannot be provided by the Missions,” he said.
“Economic migrants sometimes are unaware of the missions help, rules in the other Countries, information about E-migrate, Insurance etc, we will start awareness campaigns for several of these visitors.,” Dr Mulay said.
He informed, “I had proposed an idea that at Airports, we should have small stands where every person who goes to GCC Country is briefed for 15 minutes and given some basic numbers and literature.”
Talking of how REDIO will work, Dr. Mulay said, “The advisors will coordinate with local Indians, organizations, embassies, local government as well as Indian government, local institute & Indian States. All advisors we have are selected based on their social profile & not much on their economic qualifications.”
He further said that the core team is in India & will be monitoring & helping in solving the glitches, if any, Indian government & state governments have to play a role so there has to be a coordinating body.
“REDIO will have close to zero financial cost as everyone involved here works as a volunteer,” he said.
“It’s different from regional associations because it goes beyond region, country or state wise organization.” He further added as one of the special features of REDIO.
“I feel that if India prospers the diaspora prospers & if diaspora prospers then India prospers, this is a kind of mutuality we have & therefore this global launching I feel has a special meaning.”
Further, speaking to Ten News, Dr. Mulay explained that the initiative is to help Indian people who are overseas & in some kind of trouble, it could be somebody cheating somebody, workers being retrenched or dismissed, women suffering abuse from their employers or for any other reason.”
“REDIO Is an organisation that is in-built to help Indians out; there are network of volunteers all over the world who will try & help the person in distress in whatever condition he/she might be,” Dr Mulay further briefed.
“This way we’ll ensure that citizens of our country do not suffer when they are abroad; whether they are working or studying or for any purpose,” said Dr Mulay.
