NPP gave Meghalaya political stability, says Dy CM

Shillong, July 28 (IANS) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday claimed that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has provided the state with political stability for more than eight years, asserting that the party has remained free from internal power struggles while focusing on governance and development.

Addressing an election rally in Umdihar under Umsning in Ri Bhoi district in support of NPP candidate D.R.L. Nonglait for the Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll, Dhar contrasted the party’s tenure with previous governments, alleging that Meghalaya had witnessed frequent changes in leadership before the NPP came to power.

“For more than eight years, we have governed Meghalaya without fighting over the Chief Minister’s post, the Deputy Chief Minister’s position, or other political offices. Our priority has been serving the people,” Dhar said.

He claimed that earlier governments were marked by instability, with chief ministers being replaced at short intervals, which, according to him, affected governance and development. “Today, Meghalaya has one of its most stable governments. Stability has enabled us to concentrate on development instead of political infighting,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.

Dhar also said the NPP leadership was focused on public welfare rather than engaging in political rhetoric or responding to every criticism levelled by opponents. He urged party workers to refrain from using divisive language during the election campaign and called for maintaining political decorum.

“We should respect one another and avoid unnecessary personal attacks. Politics should be about correcting mistakes and working together for the welfare of the people rather than creating divisions,” he said.

Campaigning for Nonglait, Dhar described the NPP nominee as an experienced and grounded leader who understands the challenges faced by people in rural areas. He expressed confidence that Nonglait would effectively represent the interests of Meghalaya if elected to the Lok Sabha.

Appealing to voters in Ri Bhoi and other parts of the Shillong parliamentary constituency, Dhar said electing an MP aligned with the ruling party in the state would facilitate better coordination between the state and the Centre and help accelerate developmental projects.

He also urged party workers to remain united during the campaign, saying internal cohesion and public support were essential for ensuring the party’s victory in the bypoll.
