Delhi (India), February 28, 2023: Opposition parties in India have condemned the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia over an alleged liquor scam.

The Congress party has alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Income Tax Department have become tools of “political vendetta” under the Narendra Modi government.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) has termed the arrest of Sisodia as an “assault on democracy”.

The Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has said that “The people of Delhi will respond by defeating the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election”.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has hit back at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), terming their demonstration as “drama” and a “show of anarchy”.

CBI had sought the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister’s custody for effective interrogation to unravel the alleged scam in the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22. Sisodia was arrested on Sunday after around eight hours of questioning by the CBI.

The AAP, in response, has called the CBI’s action against Sisodia a “politically motivated move”.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, previously asserted that “The idea of opposition unity to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party doesn’t work,” prompting the detention of Sisodia.
