PM Modi to leave for Tokyo to attend state funeral of Shinzo Abe

Delhi, Sept 26th,2022: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will depart for Tokyo, Japan in a few hours to attend the state funeral of former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe.

Abe, Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister, was shot dead on July 8 while delivering a campaign speech in western Japan ahead of the House of Councillors election on July 10.

Modi had a long-standing and personal relationship with Abe and had called him a “dear friend” when he condoled his death.

Speaking about the prime minister’s visit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said, “PM Modi will be visiting Tokyo, Japan. He’ll be leaving in a few hrs from now today to attend the state funeral of former PM of Japan Shinzo Abe. PM will attend state funeral ceremony at Budokan which would be followed by a greeting occasion at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo.”

“Prime Minister Modi’s Japan visit is to honor ‘dear friend’ Abe’s memory”, Kwatra added.

During his visit, Modi will also meet the current Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida.
