Policeman’s gift to a bride: her father’s stolen jewellery bag
A 58-year-old policeman displayed exemplary honesty by returning a bag containing cash and jewellery worth Rs.8 lakh to its owner.
The bag was lying on the roadside and Mangej Singh, sub-inspector, decided to check it because of the high alert in the city. The bag owner owns a garments business in Central Delhi’s Kamla Market. Since his daughter is getting married in a few weeks, he had purchased gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs.4 lakh on Tuesday. Another Rs.7.5 lakh was kept in two separate pockets of his bag. He lost the bag while on his way to a restaurant in CP. As he was driving, some members of the notorious thak-thak gang stole his bag by diverting his attention. It is assumed the gang found Rs 3.5 lakh in the main pocket and discarded the bag in Ajmeri Gate. They had not bothered to check the other pockets, which carried the rest of the cash and jewellery. “The sub-inspector was on patrolling duty in Ajmeri Gate area on Tuesday evening. He found the abandoned bag suspicious and decided to check it. The inside pockets were found to be carrying Rs 4 lakh cash and jewellery worth around the same amount,” said Parmaditya, DCP (Central).
“I went through some documents lying in the bag and found some contact numbers. I called up those numbers to reach the bag’s owner,” Singh told The Hindu . He said the thought of keeping the bag did not even strike him once.
The sub-inspector, meanwhile, is set to be rewarded by the police.
A native of Ghaziabad, Singh lives with his wife and son who works for a private firm.
His daughter is married and is preparing for competitive examinations.
