New Delhi (India), May 2, 2023: Senior Maharashtra politician Sharad Pawar has announced his resignation as president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), but has made it clear that he is not retiring from public life. The four-time Maharashtra chief minister made the surprise announcement at the launch of his autobiography in Mumbai.
His decision was met with protests by NCP workers and leaders, many of whom were in tears. Pawar has recommended that a committee of NCP members be formed to decide on the election for the vacancy in the president’s post.
Pawar’s announcement has come amid speculation about his nephew, Ajit Pawar, a former Deputy Chief Minister, warming up to the BJP. There has been no announcement yet on who will succeed Pawar as party boss. Party workers and leaders have demanded that Sharad Pawar withdraw his decision, threatening not to leave the venue unless he rescinds it.
Sharad Pawar is one of the country’s top opposition leaders and played a significant role in forming the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, an unlikely alliance between the Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP. His daughter Supriya Sule had hinted at “two big political explosions” 15 days ago, with one in Delhi and the other in Maharashtra.
The BJP had earlier said it would “welcome” Ajit Pawar, should he decide to join the party. However, the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has said that it will not be part of the government in Maharashtra if Ajit Pawar joins the BJP with a group of NCP leaders.
