New Delhi: After the deadliest terror attack on CRPF convoy in Pulwama which took the lives of around 40 CRPF personnel, Modi government on Thursday in a befitting reply to Pakistan has announced to divert water flowing to Pakistan.

The water of three eastern rivers Ravi, Beas and Satluj which was earlier flowing to the neighbouring country will be deflected to Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.

In a tweet, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari notified about the government’s move.

The Union Minister said in its Tweet,“Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Sri @narendramodi ji, Our Govt. has decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. We will divert water from Eastern rivers

and supply it to our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.”

“The construction of dam has started at Shahpur- Kandi on Ravi river. Moreover, UJH project will store our share of water for use in J&K and the balance water will flow from 2nd Ravi-BEAS Link to provide water to other basin states”, reads the minister’s tweet.

Khawaja Shumail, secretary of Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources reacting to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said, “We have neither concern nor objection if India diverts water of eastern rivers and supplies it to its people or uses it for other purposes, as the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) allows it do so”, Khwaja quoted as saying in a Pakistani Media report.

The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan signed on September 19, 1960. The waters of the western rivers Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab was given to Pakistan and waters of the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej to India.
