New Delhi, July 15, 2023: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for maintaining silence on the issues of Manipur unrest and the European Parliament’s resolution on it while attending the Bastille Day Parade in France as the guest of honor. During the parade, a 269-member Indian tri-services contingent proudly participated, and three Rafale jets of the Indian Air Force joined the French jets in a spectacular flypast.

Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of securing a ticket to the Bastille Day Parade through the Rafale deal, while Manipur continues to face unrest. Notably, during PM Modi’s visit to France, the announcement of the Indian Navy acquiring 26 Rafale-Marine fighters for the INS Vkrant carrier was made, further igniting the ongoing political debate around the Rafale deal.

Meanwhile, ahead of PM Modi’s visit, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the Indian government to intensify efforts to contain the violence in Manipur. India strongly condemned the resolution, asserting that it amounts to unacceptable interference in India’s internal affairs, and reflects a colonial mindset. Indian foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra revealed that India had reached out to EU lawmakers before the resolution, emphasizing that the matter pertains to India’s internal affairs.

In response to the European Parliament’s resolution, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that Indian authorities, including the judiciary, are actively addressing the situation in Manipur to maintain peace, harmony, and law and order. He firmly rebuked the European Parliament, advising them to focus on their internal issues.

The silence of PM Modi on both the Manipur issue and the EU’s resolution has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. As the controversy surrounding these issues escalates, the call for the Prime Minister to address them becomes more pronounced.
