New Delhi, August 8, 2023: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been granted his former government bungalow, a day after the restoration of his Lok Sabha membership in compliance with the Supreme Court’s order.

Gandhi had vacated his residence at 12, Tughlaq Lane in April and moved to his mother Sonia Gandhi’s house after his disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification stemmed from a criminal defamation case involving a remark on the “Modi” surname, leading to a two-year jail sentence. His reinstatement as a Member of Parliament (MP) occurred on Monday, following the Supreme Court’s stay on his defamation conviction.

Gandhi received official confirmation from the Estate office regarding the bungalow allotment. While he has been offered his old residence at 12, Tughlak Lane, he’s yet to finalize his decision within the stipulated eight-day response period.

The MP from Kerala’s Wayanad had originally been allocated the 12, Tughlak Lane bungalow after winning from Amethi in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

“Thanking the people of Hindustan for giving me this house for 19 years. There is a price for speaking the truth these days. Whatever the cost, I will pay it,” Gandhi expressed upon vacating the bungalow in April.

Reports in July hinted at a potential move to the residence of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit. However, Gandhi’s visit to his constituency, Wayanad, on August 12-13 will mark his first trip after reinstatement.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal conveyed, “The people of Wayanad are elated that democracy has won, their voice has returned to Parliament! Rahul ji is not just an MP but a member of their family!”
