Rajiv Gandhi Assassination: Supreme Court Orders Release of All 6 Convicts

New Delhi, Nov 11, 2022: On Friday the Supreme Court set free all six convicts that were serving life imprisonment sentences due to their involvement in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

A bench consisting of Justices B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna held the judgment of the top court in A G Perarivalan’s case, one of the convicts, will be applicable in their matter.

On May 18, the supreme court by invoking its extraordinary power granted under Article 142 of the Constitution, ordered the release of Perarivalan who had served over 30 years in jail.

The six convicts that were released today included Nalini Sriharan, Robert Payas, Santhan, Ravichandran, Sriharan, and Murugan. The bench also noted that the convicts have spent more than three decades in prison and they showcased satisfactory conduct during their imprisonment.

Rajiv Gandhi, the youngest prime minister India had seen when he had took charge at the age of 40, was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Tamil Nadu by an LTTE bomber.

In an official statement, the decision was termed as “unacceptable” by Congress’s spokesperson Jairam Ramesh.
