National News (16/10/2026): Reliance Industries has responded to Elon Musk’s allegations against Mukesh Ambani over the delay in Starlink’s entry into India, asserting that the company is not afraid of competition. Reliance maintained that India welcomes both domestic and international investment and innovation, while emphasising that all satellite communication providers must comply with the country’s regulatory framework.

In its first public response to Musk’s repeated criticism, Reliance stated that the government follows a uniform regulatory process for all applicants, irrespective of their nationality. The company also confirmed that Jio’s satellite communication services are awaiting the necessary government approvals.

Highlighting its track record in the telecommunications sector, Reliance cited Jio’s entry into the Indian market in 2016 as an example of its competitive approach. The company noted that Jio entered an already established and highly competitive market without any existing customers and gradually built a strong presence. It added that it welcomes competition in satellite communications, including from Starlink, provided all companies operate in accordance with Indian laws and policies.

Elon Musk Accuses Reliance of Protecting Telecom Interests

The response follows Musk’s allegations that Mukesh Ambani is attempting to delay Starlink’s entry into India to protect established telecom operators. In a post on X, Musk sarcastically referred to Ambani as “Prime Minister Ambani” and questioned the influence of the Reliance chairman over India’s market structure. He further alleged that the delay in Starlink’s launch was protecting existing market interests.

Musk’s remarks have intensified the debate over competition in India’s satellite communication sector, where global players such as Starlink are seeking to expand their services.

Telecom Ministry Defends India’s Regulatory Framework

Meanwhile, the Telecom Ministry has rejected allegations of preferential treatment, maintaining that India’s regulatory framework for satellite communications is fair and non-discriminatory.

Reiterating its position, Reliance said that competition should be welcomed in the satellite communication market and that all operators, including Jio and Starlink, must adhere to Indian laws and regulatory requirements.

The exchange highlights the growing contest between established telecom operators and global satellite internet providers as India prepares for further developments in satellite-based connectivity. The eventual entry and expansion of these services could reshape the country’s internet market and broaden connectivity options for consumers.
