New Delhi, August 17, 2023:  The renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library to the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library Society has ignited a fervent debate, with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi emphasizing that Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy is defined by his deeds, not just his name.

This statement comes in the wake of a heated exchange between the BJP and Congress, where the parties traded barbs over the renaming.

“Nehru Ji ki pehchaan unke karam hai, unka naam nahi,” Rahul Gandhi remarked while en route to Ladakh.

The renaming decision, effective from August 14, has evoked strong reactions. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having a deep-seated agenda to defame and dismantle Nehru’s legacy. He said, “He (Modi) has erased N and put P instead. That P is really for pettiness and peeve.”

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the move as petty, advocating for a continuation of the name “Nehru Memorial Prime Ministers Museum and Library.”

The BJP contended that the renamed museum now encompasses the legacies of all prime ministers, transcending Nehru’s era. A Surya Prakash, Vice Chairman of the museum, affirmed that Nehru’s contributions remain intact within the new museum showcase. “Anyone visiting the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) can see how we have showcased Nehru, his temples of modern India, the Hirakud Dam, Nagarajuna Sagar Dam, his idea of setting up institutes of technology, and Planning Commission,” Surya Prakash clarified.
