New Delhi (India), May 6, 2023: The women’s wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) declared homosexuality a disorder, adding that it will exacerbate if same-sex marriages are legalized in India.

According to a survey of 318 medical professionals across eight different paths of treatment, 70% of doctors and allied medical professionals think homosexuality is a disorder, while 83% confirmed the transmission of sexual diseases in homosexual relationships.

The RSS body stated that legalizing non-heterosexual marriages may cause more disorder in society, and counseling is the better option to cure patients of this psychological disorder. The survey suggested that public opinion should be taken before making any decision on the demand for legalizing non-heterosexual marriage.

Religious groups have been vehemently opposing the recognition of non-heterosexual marriage, with some claiming it is “harmful for human existence.” The Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha wrote to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stating that such unions are ‘harmful for human existence’ and suggested a ‘register’ to protect and ensure the rights of LGBTQIA+ community members.

Meanwhile, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) has claimed in a report that homosexuality is not a mental illness, and there is no scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be altered by any treatment. The American Psychiatric Association has also issued a resolution stating that homosexuality is not a mental illness or sickness.

The RSS considers marriage as ‘Sanskar’ in the Hindu life which is neither for enjoyment nor contract but for social good. However, the debate on non-heterosexual marriages continues to spark controversy and division among different sections of society.
