Delhi News (10/02/2026): A delegation of the Sarojini Nagar Market Shopkeepers’ Association (Regd.) met Member of Parliament from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj, on 8 February 2026 to draw attention to serious public safety risks, growing encroachments, and alleged violations linked to illegal kiosk allotments at the Sarojini Nagar Metro Station on the Pink Line.
During the interaction, the association highlighted that a large number of kiosks have been installed in areas earmarked for passenger assembly and emergency evacuation. According to the delegation, these allotments have significantly compromised commuter safety, led to frequent congestion, and increased the risk of stampede-like situations during peak hours. The shopkeepers also pointed out that such installations are in violation of existing court directions and safety norms.
The delegation further informed the MP that the Delhi High Court has issued clear instructions to keep Sarojini Nagar Market permanently free from encroachments. However, despite repeated representations and assurances from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation officials, additional kiosks were recently allotted, worsening the already critical situation.

Concerns were also raised regarding the lack of coordination among the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the New Delhi Municipal Council, and local police authorities, which, according to the association, has allowed encroachments and safety violations to persist unchecked.
Bansuri Swaraj listened carefully to the issues presented and assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities, including the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Government of India. She emphasized that public safety must take precedence over commercial interests and assured that steps would be initiated to ensure compliance with safety regulations, court orders, and public interest requirements.
The association also requested the MP to personally visit Sarojini Nagar Market to assess the ground situation. The request was positively acknowledged.

Expressing appreciation for her time and constructive approach, the Sarojini Nagar Market Shopkeepers’ Association reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe, orderly, and encroachment-free market environment in the interest of traders, commuters, and the general public.
