Thiruvananthapuram, March 24 (IANS) The Supreme Court cannot absolve itself of its responsibilities on the Ayodhya issue and has to first come out with a verdict in the case, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Friday.

It is not correct for the apex court to suggest an out-of-court settlement on the vexed Ayodhya issue, as it was tried out before, he told media persons here.

“The present issue is concerning the title of the land and for that the Supreme Court cannot absolve itself of its responsibilities and seek a consensus. The political consensus can take place after the apex court makes its verdict,” Yechury said.

“What surprises us is that the Congress party is vacillating on this issue. It was during the tenure of (Prime Minister) P.V. Narashima Rao that the Babri Masjid was razed,” Yechury pointed out. He had come here to attend a meeting of his Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
