New Delhi: Unhappy with the Supreme Court’s ruling to amend SC/ST atrocities act, member of dalit community held score of rallies in Central Delhi on SC/ST Bharat Band day.

Owing to the SC\ST Bharat Band rallies, major roads of the central Delhi on Monday witnessed huge traffic jam. The worst affected areas were central Delhi roads including busy stretches connecting Mandi House to ITO, Parliament Street connecting Connaught Place, Janpath road connecting Connaught place and so on.

Members of dalit or pro-dalit organisations gathered at Parliament Street and Mandi House square on Monday morning and hold rallies there to show their disappointment over the Supreme Court ruling which resulted huge traffic jam.

Owing to the peak hours, the vehicles were crawling on the roads. Moreover, police administration also suspended metro services or shut the metro gates in some area in order to maintain law and order.

However, the Twitter handle of Delhi Traffic Police was constantly posting updates about the jams due to the rally and areas that would see heavy traffic.

In order to prevent the misuse of SC/ST atrocities act, the SC last month ruled that a preliminary inquiry must be conducted by police within seven days of an alleged incident before taking any action and immediate arrest of the accused in any case related to SC/ST and Union government to amend it.

The issue irked the dalit community and parties and on Monday they called Bharat Band against the ruling.

The nationwide bandh called by Dalit organisations on Monday turned violent as people resorted to stone pelting, damaging properties across various states. Four persons were killed and several others, including policemen, were injured in the protests that took a violent turn in Madhya Pradesh. Violent protests were reported in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab, while Section 144 has been imposed in Gwalior.

The protestors in the morning blocked several trains in Bihar and Jharkhand, affecting railway services. Meanwhile, the government has moved a review petition in the Supreme Court today.
