New Delhi, 18th May 2023: The Indian Supreme Court upheld the Tamil Nadu government’s law that allowed Jallikattu or the bull-taming sport in the state.
The five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph refused to let the judiciary come in the way of the legislature and maintained that when the state legislature declared ‘Jallikattu’ as a part of the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, it remains so.
Played during Pongal harvest, the ‘Jallikattu’ or the ‘Eruthazhuvuthal’ is a sport involving young men who attempt to tame a bull by hanging on to it for as long as possible
The Indian Supreme Court had earlier in 2017 ruled that the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, minimises cruelty to animals in sports and that the Act includes a number of measures to ensure the welfare of bulls, such as requiring them to be properly fed and watered, and prohibiting using sharp chemicals or objects near them.
