SC Welcomes New Judges: Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and SV Bhatti Sworn in to Bolster Bench Strength

New Delhi, July 14, 2023: In a significant development, Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and SV Bhatti were sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court on Friday, elevating the working strength of the apex court to 32. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to the two judges during a solemn ceremony held at the Supreme Court, attended by fellow judges and members of the legal fraternity.

The elevation of Justices Bhuyan and Bhatti to the Supreme Court was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on July 5. Subsequently, the Central government officially notified their appointments on July 12, solidifying their positions on the country’s highest judicial platform.

Prior to their elevation, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan served as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, while Justice SV Bhatti held the position of Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. Notably, Justice Bhuyan’s parent High Court is the Gauhati High Court, where he was initially appointed as a judge on October 17, 2011.

With a wealth of experience, he currently holds the distinguished position of being the senior-most judge of his parent High Court. Justice Bhuyan took charge as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on June 28, 2022, before receiving this elevated responsibility.

Justice SV Bhatti, on the other hand, began his judicial career as a judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on April 12, 2013. Similarly, he holds the distinction of being the senior-most judge in his parent High Court. Following a transfer to the Kerala High Court in March 2019, Justice Bhatti assumed the esteemed position of Chief Justice in the state on June 1, 2023.
