What: Shekhar Suman escapes near fatal accident while performing Ek Mulaqaat

Where: Gujarat University, Convention Centre, Ahmedabad

While performing the 48th show of Saif Hyder Hasan’s celebrated play Ek Mulaqaat, Shekhar Suman narrowly escaped what could have been a fatal accident. While performing the climactic portion of the play at Gujarat University, Convention Centre, Ahmedabad, disaster struck. A light weighing 30 kgs toppled off from a height of 30 feet. Sahir Ludhianvi (Shekhar Suman) was articulating heartfelt emotions to Amrita Pritam (Deepti Naval) when disaster struck. A huge thud was heard. A light had toppled off, grazing Shekhar Suman’s shoulder, missing his head by a few inches.

“In those few moments, I saw my entire life pass by me. The faces of my family members flashed before me,” says the actor, still dazed by the event. A few lines here and there, it was certain that Deepti Naval, who was to exchange positions with Suman, would have been the centre of the disaster.

But both the actors, being thorough professionals, continued with their performance. The audience which was appreciative of the play since the beginning broke into a thunderous applause.

As they say, God’s will cannot be changed and it was God who willed protection to Shekhar Suman and Deepti Naval.

This incident raises a very important issue – security at venues designed for performance.
“The auditorium authorities need to realize that maintenance is the key. The Gujarat Convention Centre has good but ill maintained equipment,” says the Director of the play Saif Hyder Hasan. “Anything could have happened,” he shudders.
