Silver Price Forecast: XAG/USD Slides Over 4% as Warsh Sparks Fresh Fed Rate-Hike Fears

National News (30/08/2026): Silver prices came under heavy pressure at the end of the week as renewed expectations of tighter US monetary policy pushed Treasury yields and the US dollar higher, weighing on precious metals. Spot silver closed at around $62.49 an ounce, down $2.72 or 4.17%, recording a sharper decline than gold during the same session.

The sell-off followed remarks by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole economic gathering, where he indicated that the US central bank may still have work to do before it can be confident that inflation is sustainably moving towards its target. His comments revived speculation that the Federal Reserve could consider another rate increase at its September 16 policy meeting.

Silver Falls More Than Gold as Rate Fears Return

Silver began Friday’s session on a stronger footing but failed to sustain its upward momentum. The metal initially climbed to around $71.18 an ounce, its highest level since June 17, before reversing sharply and finishing substantially lower.

Gold also declined following Warsh’s remarks, but its fall was less severe. Silver’s larger decline highlights the additional pressure created by its industrial exposure. Unlike gold, which is primarily viewed as a monetary and safe-haven asset, silver has significant demand from sectors such as solar energy, electronics, automobiles and manufacturing.

As a result, expectations of higher borrowing costs can affect silver through two channels: a stronger dollar and higher yields can reduce investment demand, while tighter financial conditions may raise concerns about industrial consumption.

Dollar and Treasury Yields Strengthen

US financial markets reacted quickly to the more hawkish tone. The two-year Treasury yield climbed by more than 10 basis points to 4.35%, reaching its highest level since late July. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index gained 0.56% to 99.688, its strongest level since August 19.

The dollar also moved back above its 200-day moving average, adding another layer of pressure on dollar-denominated commodities. A stronger US currency generally makes metals priced in dollars more expensive for overseas buyers.

Market expectations for the September Federal Reserve meeting changed significantly after the speech. Fed funds futures increased the probability of a September rate hike from about 35.4% to 57.5%, marking a substantial shift in investor positioning within a single trading session.

Silver’s Industrial Demand Adds to Market Concerns

The sharper fall in silver compared with gold has renewed attention on the metal’s industrial fundamentals. Silver is widely used in photovoltaic technology, electrical and electronic equipment, automotive components and several manufacturing applications.

Higher interest rates can potentially slow investment, construction activity and business expansion, creating concerns over future industrial consumption. This makes silver particularly sensitive when monetary tightening expectations rise at the same time that questions emerge over the pace of global economic growth.

Gold declined about 3% on the session, while silver fell more than 4%, underlining the different demand structures supporting the two precious metals.

Technical Outlook Turns Cautious

From a technical perspective, silver’s broader trend remains positive, but Friday’s reversal has weakened short-term momentum. The market’s failure to hold its earlier gains and subsequent sharp decline has created a potentially bearish closing price reversal pattern, which can signal the possibility of further correction over the next several trading sessions.

The recent trading range extends from approximately $54.78 to $71.18. Its 50% retracement level near $62.98 has emerged as an important area for the market. Silver closed below this level, keeping downside risks in focus.

The next important support areas are around $62.56, followed by the 50-day moving average near $61.18. A sustained break below these levels could expose the market to the longer-term $60.84 region, which represents another significant technical support zone.

On the upside, the $71.18 recent high remains an important hurdle. The 200-day moving average, around $71.5, has also developed into major resistance after silver failed to break through the area decisively.

Weekly Loss Deepens

Silver ended the week down approximately 3.78%, marking its weakest weekly performance since mid-July. Gold, by comparison, recorded a weekly decline of around 1.58%.

The performance gap became particularly visible after Friday’s reversal. Earlier in the week, both metals had benefited from expectations surrounding a US Treasury buyback announcement, which had encouraged buying across precious metals. However, the renewed rate-hike narrative quickly reversed some of those gains.

Asian Physical Demand Also in Focus

Physical-market conditions could become another factor for silver investors. Reports of widening discounts in India’s gold market during the week pointed to softer physical demand amid speculation surrounding a possible rollback in import duties.

Although silver and gold have different demand structures, developments in the Asian precious-metals market can influence investor sentiment across the broader metals complex. Any continued weakness in physical demand could make it more difficult for silver to absorb additional selling pressure from financial markets.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The focus now shifts to incoming US inflation and employment data, which could determine whether the market continues to price a higher probability of a September rate increase. With two-year Treasury yields at 4.35% and September hike expectations above 50%, economic data released before the Federal Reserve’s September 16 meeting could become particularly important for silver.

For traders, the $62-$63 region is likely to remain a critical near-term zone. Holding above support could allow silver to stabilise after Friday’s sharp correction, while a decisive break below the 50-day moving average near $61.18 could increase the risk of a deeper pullback towards $60.84.

Overall, silver’s long-term trend has not necessarily been overturned, but the market has entered a more challenging short-term environment. Higher US yields, a stronger dollar, renewed rate-hike expectations and questions surrounding industrial demand have combined to put significant pressure on XAG/USD, leaving traders increasingly focused on upcoming economic data and key technical support levels.
