New Delhi (India), April 27, 2023: The release of gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh from Bihar’s Saharsa jail, following the Bihar government’s amendment of prison rules allowing the release of 27 convicts, including him, has caused outrage among the family of the late Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah, who was murdered by a mob allegedly incited by Singh.

Uma Devi, the widow of the deceased DM, has appealed to President Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ask Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to send Singh back to jail.

Devi called the decision to release the murder convict “wrong” and urged the Chief Minister not to “encourage these types of things.” The daughter of the deceased IAS officer, Padma, also called on the state government to reconsider its decision and appealed to Kumar to give it a second thought.

Singh had been serving a life sentence for the 1994 murder of the then-Gopalganj DM G Krishnaiah. His release was welcomed by supporters, but there has been a backlash from the opposition in the state. Singh had been on parole for 15 days to attend his son’s engagement ceremony and had returned to Saharsa jail on April 26 following the end of his parole period.

The release of Singh has been deemed “unfair to the whole nation” by the family of the deceased DM, who has vowed to appeal against the government’s decision.

Singh’s wife, Lovely Anand, is also a Lok Sabha MP, while their son, Chetan Anand, is an RJD MLA from Bihar’s Sheohar. The public has been called to boycott Singh if he contests elections in the future, and the family has urged the government to reconsider its decision.
