New Delhi, Nov 5, 2022: As Delhi’s air pollution worsens, curbs have been imposed on vehicles, schools, and outdoor activities, among other things. Several authorities have pointed out “stubble burning” as a major reason behind the deteriorating air quality.

In an interview to a private news channel revered social activitist and founder of NGO Chetna refuted the claims pertaining to stubble burning.

He shared that the 4 major reasons behind the poor-quality AQI in Delhi are – Aviation, Railways, Thermal Power Plants and NHAI category.

He further shared that the usage of 1 ton Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) leads to the generation of huge amount of carbon dioxide along with dust, PM10, PM2.5, and carbon monoxide, among other things.

“According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, 1ton of ATF, petrol and diesel leads to the generation of 3.157 metric ton. Meanwhile, 1 ton of petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG and electric result in the release of 3.15 metric ton, 3.16 metric ton, 2.7 metric ton, 1.49 metric ton, and 0.82 metric ton worth of C02 respectively,” shared Mr. Sood.

He further went on to state that 35,000 metric ton worth of CO2 is generated over Delhi by aircrafts per day.

“According to OECD, the total CO2 released into the airport region during September was around 2.5lakh metric ton,” he shared.

During the interview, Mr. Sood mentions that the Central Pollution Control Board is yet to accurately measure the CO2 generation as a result of airports.

He stated that substantial wind speed during the summer prevents the air quality index from worsening as much as it happens during the months of November December.

According to Mr. Sood, night-flying restrictions or night-time curfews can help our nation protect the environment. In a recent PIL, he also alleged concealment of information related to CO2 generation and noise pollution as the Delhi airport plans to unveil their 4th runaway by 2023.
