New Delhi (India), April 11, 2023: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has written a scathing editorial for The Hindu, criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for ignoring pressing issues and dismantling India’s democracy.

In the piece titled “An enforced silence cannot solve India’s problems,” Gandhi accused the government of preventing opposition parties from raising issues like unemployment, inflation, and social divisions, while also mentioning the recent disruptions in Parliament.

She implied that these were distractions to passing the Union Budget 2023, which was passed without any debate.

Gandhi also accused the government of misusing central probe agencies to file cases only against opposition parties and of intimidating the judiciary. She further criticized the BJP and RSS for “egging on” hatred and violence, accusing PM Modi of “ignoring” it.

With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections looming, Gandhi said the next few months are crucial for India’s democracy, and the Congress will join hands with like-minded parties to defend the Constitution and its ideals.

The editorial comes amid a nationwide debate over the state of India’s democracy, with several opposition parties accusing the government of suppressing dissent and stifling freedom of expression.
