New Delhi, 07th July 2023: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed turning the BIMSTEC region, which includes seven member countries, into a “borderless” tourism zone.
He addressed the 67th annual conference of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), one of India’s oldest travel-related organisations, at the historic Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BIMCH). ‘Transcending Borders, Transforming Lives’ is the topic of this year’s TAAI convention.
The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional alliance made up of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, and Bhutan.
President Wickremesinghe also spoke about the island nation’s progress since last year’s economic catastrophe in his address.
“So, why don’t we make our entire BIMSTEC area one borderless tourism (region)… that’s what you want… crossing borders,” he suggested. It’s “one tourist area” for anyone coming from outside, the president added, for Sri Lankans visiting India and Indians visiting Bangladesh.
President Wickremesinghe also discussed various projects intended by his government to help speed up Sri Lanka’s recovery from the 2022 crisis, including seven golf courses and additional resorts. He said some regulations will be altered to meet the tourism sector’s goals.
