Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday announced Rs 25 lakh compensation to the families of 43 doctors who had lost their lives while on Covid-19 patient treatment duty.

Former president of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Dr Ravi Wankhedekar lauded the step by the state government and said, “Thanks to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru for announcing Rs 25 lacs for doctors deceased due to Covid. They have also announced incentives per month from March 2021 to the doctors serving in Covid facilities. Hopefully, government of India and other state government follow the same.”

Earlier, Delhi government had announced to give a compensation of 1 crore rupees to medical practitioners who die while serving Covid-19 patients. In January, CM Kejriwal had also visited homes of few such doctors and distributed cheques for the same.

Moreover, UP government has already announced to give additional honorarium, 25 percent of the salary, as an incentive to the health department frontline workers.

Now with these states coming out with such measures, there is a growing demand from the medical fraternity to implement such welfare initiatives on the national level.
