Tragedy Strikes Indore Temple on Ram Navami, 13 dead

New Delhi (India), March 30, 2023: In a tragic incident at the Beleshwar Mahadev temple in Indore this morning, more than 30 people fell into a stepwell after the roof above it collapsed under heavy footfall on the occasion of Ram Navami.

At least 25 people got trapped inside the well. Following a swift rescue operation, nine devotees, including two children, were rescued and taken to the hospital. However, 13 people were pronounced dead in the accident.

Reaching the accident spot, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra, said, “As per the latest info, 11 bodies have been recovered. Of the 19 people who were rescued, two died. So, a total of 13 have died. Order has been given to probe into the incident.”

The incident occurred amid a rush of devotees who had gathered to celebrate Ram Navami. As per reports, the floor of the temple gave way under the weight of heavy footfall, resulting in several devotees falling into the stepwell.

Police and rescue teams are currently working to rescue those who are still trapped, with 12 ambulances on standby to transport the injured to hospitals.

The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has assured that the rescue operation is underway and that efforts are being made to ensure the safety of all those trapped inside. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed concern over the incident and spoke to the Chief Minister to get an update on the situation.

Indore collector T Raja has said that “The administration is closely monitoring the situation and rescue work is ongoing”.
