Trailer of ‘The Tashkent Files’ launched in Delhi, based on the mysterious death of Lal Bahadur Shastri

New Delhi, (25/3/2019): Bollywood seems to be drifting away from its masala movies or mindless comedies to content based films. Masala films now does not tend to attract masses like before.

Today, in New Delhi, Vivek Agnihotri, a prominent bollywood director, screenwriter and producer, launched his upcoming film’s trailer. The film’s name is ‘The Tashkent Files’ and is based upon the mysterious death of our second and former Prime Minister and an outstanding leader of India Lal Bahadur Shastri.



Famous for his slogan of ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’, Lal Bahadur Shastri led the country during the Indo Pakistan War of 1965. His slogan became very popular during the war. The war formally ended with the Tashkent Agreement on 10 January in 1966.

After signing the Tashkent Agreement to end the war, he died the following day, while still in Tashkent. The cause of his death in dispute, was initially reported to be a cardiac arrest.

The film ‘The Tashkent Files’ is based upon the mysterious death of the former PM. Addressing the conference, film’s director Vivek Agnihotri said, “this film just happened to me, i have not planned anything like this but one day when i asked my son about Lal Bahadur Shastri, i was surprised that he don’t know him. It gives me a shock and i decided to study about his life and his mysterious death, i want to know about the real reason behind his death, then we started researching about him, i filed RTI’s regarding him as well. So here we are launching the trailer of this film”.

Talking at the event, Lal Bahadur Shastri’s son, Sunil Shastri said, “my father died when i was only 16 years old and it is very hard for me to believe that my father and the Prime Minister of the country is no more. And what shocked me more that reports suggests that he died of a cardiac arrest. But we still are not able to get confirmation of the real cause of his death. I truly thank Vivek for this initiative to make a film about him, to aware people about our former Prime Minister who seems to be lost within the politics of this country”.

The Tashkent Files is a film which portrays a journalist’s approach towards digging the truth about Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death. Prominent actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Mithun Chakraborty, and Mandira Bedi are seen in the trailer of the film. This is the first film in the history of Bollywood Industry to be a tribute to journalists of the country. The film will be released on 12th April 2019.
