Kolkata, July 12, 2023: In a resounding victory, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) emerged triumphant in the West Bengal panchayat elections, securing a majority in all three tiers of rural local government. The TMC’s remarkable performance saw them clinch 2,552 out of 3,317-gram panchayats, 232 panchayat samitis, and 12 out of 20 zilla parishads, leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) far behind with a meager 212-gram panchayats and 7 panchayat samitis, failing to win any zilla parishads.

While the TMC celebrated their victory, these elections, considered a litmus test for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s popularity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, were marred by widespread violence. Over the course of the weekend, incidents of poll-related violence escalated, resulting in the unfortunate loss of approximately 40 lives. Allegations of electoral fraud, booth capturing, and voter suppression further tainted the electoral process.

Amidst the chaos, opposition parties accused the TMC of resorting to unscrupulous tactics, obstructing the entry of opposition observers into counting centers, and intimidating their agents. The BJP’s leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, decried the “desperate attempts to loot votes” orchestrated by TMC supporters. In response, the Trinamool claimed that the majority of casualties were their own workers or supporters.

Despite the allegations and malicious campaigns, the Trinamool Congress emerged unscathed, firmly retaining its hold on the hearts and minds of the people of West Bengal. Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee expressed gratitude to the voters, remarking on the transformation of the opposition’s “No Vote To Mamata” campaign into a resounding “Now Vote For Mamata.”

The rampant violence and reports of ballot box tampering led West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose to submit a comprehensive report to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding stern action against those responsible. While the victory brings a sense of accomplishment to the TMC, it is undeniable that the path to success was marred by unfortunate incidents that will undoubtedly raise concerns about the democratic process and the safety of voters in the state.
