Ukraine-Russia War Will Be Decided on the Battlefield, Not at the Negotiating Table: Indranil Banerjie
TEN NEWS NETWORK
Greater Noida (3 June 2025): The Ukraine-Russia war, now stretching into its third year, has become one of the most defining and destabilizing global conflicts of the 21st century. What began in February 2022 as a full-scale invasion by Russia has since evolved into a prolonged and brutal confrontation, drawing in global powers and reshaping international alliances. At the heart of this complex geopolitical struggle lies a web of military strategies, economic sanctions, energy politics, and ideological divides.
In an exclusive interaction with Ten News Network , Indranil Banerjie, a veteran geopolitical analyst known for his deep understanding of international relations and South Asian strategic affairs, offers a piercing analysis of the war’s trajectory, its global implications, and the shifting roles of major powers such as the United States, Russia, and emerging players like India.
“A Proxy War Led by the West”
Banerjie emphasized that the Ukraine-Russia conflict is not merely a bilateral war between two neighboring countries but rather a proxy conflict involving the United States and its NATO allies, aimed at weakening Russia strategically.
“This is not just a Ukraine-Russia war,” Banerjie stated. It is actually a proxy war waged by the United States, even though the narrative internationally is centered on Ukraine’s sovereignty. The battlefield, however, is in Eastern Europe, and that’s where the real decisions will be made—not in diplomatic rooms.
He further suggested that while negotiations between leaders—such as the reported meeting between Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin—may create headlines, they are unlikely to yield any significant results. Both sides have taken hardened positions. There’s little room for meaningful compromise at this stage, he added.
Gradual U.S. Disengagement Expected
When asked about the future course of the war, Banerjie predicted that the United States may begin to gradually distance itself from direct involvement, especially with changing political dynamics back home. The U.S. won’t continue funding Ukraine at the same levels as it did during the early phases of the conflict, particularly under previous presidential leadership. Domestic pressures will lead to reduced engagement.
However, Banerjie believes that European countries will continue to back Ukraine militarily and politically, which may further prolong the war. Nations like France, Germany, and the UK seem intent on escalating support, and this could push Europe onto a dangerous path—potentially toward a broader confrontation with Russia.
India’s Position: Isolated but Resilient
Discussing the global economic implications, especially in the context of India, Banerjie explained that while the war will have global economic repercussions, India might remain relatively insulated from the worst effects. There will be an impact on global supply chains and trade, but India is not as exposed. The economic fallout will be far more severe in Europe and Russia.
He even suggested that India could potentially benefit in certain strategic sectors, depending on how global trade realigns during and after the conflict.
A Call for Peace Amid Geopolitical Realignments
Banerjie concluded by reiterating the need for a global movement toward peace, expressing hope that the United States would eventually shift its focus from military strategy to humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. America’s aim of weakening Russia through Ukraine may have seen some results, but it’s time to prioritize world peace over prolonged conflict. The continuation of this war will bring devastation, particularly to Europe and Russia.
As the war continues to evolve, Banerjie’s perspective offers a sobering reminder that realpolitik, power dynamics, and historical insecurities often drive wars more than ideals—and that peace might still be a distant reality unless major powers reassess their long-term strategies.
The Ukraine-Russia war, now in its third year. While Ukraine has received extensive support from NATO countries, the war has led to massive humanitarian crises, economic disruptions, and a rethinking of security policies across Europe and Asia. Despite numerous attempts at negotiations, no lasting resolution has yet been reached.
