UNO needs to be strengthened so that all its members recognize its force and listen to its voice and stop inhuman killings Brig. K.G. Behl

United Nations is an association of the States which have pledged
themselves to maintain International Peace and Security and cooperate
in solving International Political, Economic, Social, Cultural and
humanitarian problems towards achieving this end.  It was established
after World War-II with the hope that the members states will work
together with the motto to establish peace and security in the world
and take up schemes for development in under-developed  countries. It
was functioning well through its various agencies but lately, there
was a realization that the UN needs a change as it has become unwieldy
to  promptly gauge the situation and take appropriate action due to
veto rights given to a few countries who every now and then try to
enforce their views.
Lately a number of battles are taking place in different parts of the
world and the way those are being fought,it leaves an impression that
they have no value for human life and they are not prepared to listen
to UN advise. The Gaza and Iraq are glairing examples  where the
unnecessary blood shed needs to be stopped immediately.
Of course India is helping U.N.O. in its mission to keep peace in
certain riot affected areas of different Countries by sending troops,
as part of Peace Keeping Force to maintain peace there. India is also
providing experts in different fields to help U.N. in executing their
projects.
It is felt that the Security Council  which
consists of 15 members and  each of which has one vote should be
expanded to include more influential countries like India to
strengthen it. Out of these five are permanent members and ten non-
permanent members who are elected by the General Assembly, by a two
third majority, for a term of two years. The Permanent members have
the powers to Veto any move. These members are China, France, Russia,
U.K. and U.S.A. In 1971, communist China was admitted as a permanent
member of the Security Council of the U.N. with full Veto rights,
which was so far being represented by Taiwan as Nationalist China.
It is being discussed whether to remove Veto  power  from all or
some more countries be given Veto powers to make it more effective or
increase the strengthen of security council by taking permanent
members from different regions. The retiring members are not eligible
for immediate re – election but even this can be revised. However any
other member of the U.N. can be invited to participate in the Security
Council proceedings to present or clarify their case but without a
right to vote. India is being tipped by many countries for a permanent
seat in the UN security council. Presidency of  this Council is held
for one month in rotation by the member States in alphabetic order of
their names.
The General Assembly consists of the representatives
of all the member states. Each State has one vote but can send up to
five representatives. The General Assembly meets at least once in an
year A special session can however be called by the Secretary General,
on the request of the Security Council. The General Assembly passes
the budget of the U. N. and determines the contribution payable by
each member. It receives and considers report of the Security Council
as well as the special U.N. committees and decides important questions
by a two thirds majority and others by simple majority.
The Principal organs of the U.N. are: General
Assembly, Secretariat, Security Council,, Trusteeship Council,
Economic and Social Council and International Court of Justice.
The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary General
who is to carry out the functions of the U.N.
In view of the above UN needs a definite change  where India can play
a big role to strengthen UN. Since the leaders of the world are
pinning more hope on Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi of
India, this issue can be taken up with him and India can play a big
role to strengthen UN.
