Unidentified gunmen shot veteran Communist Party of India leader Govind Pansare, 82, and his wife Uma, 72, at Sagar Mal area in Kolhapur this morning. The gunmen, who came on a bike, fired five bullets at the Pansare couple. Both are critical and have been admitted to Aster Aadhar hospital.

The attack happened barely 20 meter away from Pansare’s home at Torna colony in Sagar Mal locality. Both Pansare and Uma were coming back after their morning walk when assailants targeted them in a lane adjoined to Sagar Mal English Medium School. Pansare appeared to be the primary target of the assailants since at-least two bullets hit him.

Inspector general of Kolhapur police range, Ritesh Kumar said that police teams have been formed to investigate the case. “Five shells of the bullet were found at the spot and we are investigating every possibility. At present there is no clue other than the information given by the citizens who admitted the Pansare couple to the hospital”, he said.
