Vice President Inaugurates ‘MALHAR 2026’, Highlights India’s Classical Music Heritage

National News (22 August 2026): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday inaugurated ‘MALHAR 2026’, a youth-focused, monsoon-themed celebration of Indian classical music organised by Antar Hriday Connect in New Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice President praised Antar Hriday Connect for providing young people with opportunities to connect with India’s rich classical music traditions. He particularly appreciated the organisation’s efforts to promote free classical music concerts and make the country’s cultural heritage more accessible to the younger generation.

Radhakrishnan said that every region of India has its own distinctive musical traditions, sounds and styles, but music continues to serve as a powerful force that unites the country. Describing India’s musical diversity, he said, “many musical traditions, one shared spirit; many voices, one Bharat.”

Referring to the traditional association of the Malhar family of ragas with the monsoon season, the Vice President said that ‘MALHAR’ represents renewal and rejuvenation. He noted that music has the unique ability to refresh the human spirit, stimulate imagination and inspire hope.

The Vice President also highlighted the enduring nature of India’s classical music traditions. He said the classical music heritage has remained vibrant because it has continuously evolved while retaining its cultural roots.

Calling upon the youth to play a greater role in preserving India’s cultural legacy, Radhakrishnan urged young people to become custodians and ambassadors of the country’s civilisational heritage. He encouraged them to take Indian classical music and other cultural traditions to communities across the world.

He further described music as one of India’s strongest forms of soft power, noting that it can overcome linguistic and geographical barriers while promoting friendship, mutual understanding and goodwill among people.

Congratulating everyone associated with MALHAR 2026, the Vice President expressed hope that the initiative would develop into a regular annual musical journey, returning every monsoon with greater enthusiasm, wider participation and a growing appreciation for Indian classical music.

Rajya Sabha MP and Chief Patron of Antar Hriday, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, President of Corporate Affairs at ITC Anil Rajput, Chairman of Galaxy and Sawasdee Group Pradeep Kumar, Antar Hriday Youth Cultural Ambassador for India Saurav Sharma, along with other dignitaries, were present at the event.
