National News (04/10/2026): Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma has praised Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy for its rigorous testing regime designed to ensure that its scooters can withstand the demanding conditions of Indian roads.

Sharma reacted to a post by Ather Energy co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta, who shared a glimpse of the company’s testing laboratory and highlighted the extensive validation process followed before its electric scooters reach customers. Describing the approach as a “lethal idea,” Sharma appeared to applaud Ather’s focus on building vehicles capable of handling real-world challenges.

Ather’s testing programme is designed to replicate years of wear and tear under controlled laboratory conditions. The process subjects scooters to repeated impacts, mud, dust, water exposure and mechanical stress to identify potential weaknesses and evaluate long-term durability.

Among the specialised equipment used by Ather is a machine called Goliath, which repeatedly drops a scooter from a height of around 400 mm. According to the company, the system can conduct up to 40,000 drop cycles, simulating the repeated shocks vehicles may encounter while navigating potholes, uneven surfaces and rough roads.

Another testing system, known as Button Masher, repeatedly operates switches and buttons to assess their durability. The equipment is designed to determine whether these components can withstand thousands of usage cycles while continuing to function reliably.

Ather also conducts extensive environmental testing to assess how its electric scooters perform under challenging weather and road conditions. Vehicles are exposed to dust, high-pressure water and water-submersion tests to simulate situations involving heavy rain, muddy roads and waterlogged conditions.

The company’s laboratory-based validation process is intended to replicate the harsh conditions that electric scooters may face during years of everyday use. By subjecting vehicles to extreme and repeated stress before they reach customers, Ather aims to improve their reliability, durability and performance on Indian roads.

Sharma’s comments have also brought attention to the growing focus among Indian electric vehicle manufacturers on rigorous, locally relevant testing as the adoption of electric two-wheelers continues to expand.
