Rai lodged a complaint with the CBI against senior BJP leader and former union minister Vikram Verma, alleging that he used his influence to get his daughter, pursuing MBBS at Santosh Medical College in Ghaziabad, transferred to Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal.

“If they (SIT/STF) are continuing, then what is the point of transfer (of Vyapam cases to CBI)”, Sibal said while urging the court to ask the CBI “by when they will complete the takeover of cases“.

Besides, Congress was also going to raise the issue of “lawlessness” in the state by highlighting the killing of journalist Sandeep Kothari, who was kidnapped from Balaghat district and burnt alive allegedly by mining mafia last month.

The problem for the CBI is that the Vyapam scam is not the only case it would be investigating.

“Keeping in view the urgency of the matter, we permit the SIT/STF to take appropriate proceedings against the persons mentioned in the memo at serial number 1 to 245 in accordance with law and in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure”, an apexcourt bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Amitava Roy said.

In a huge embarrassment to MP Governor Ram Naresh Yadav, the top court also issued a notice to him on a petition that challenged the high court’s quashing of an FIR filed against him for alleged complicity in the forest guard recruitment scam. “We won’t sit quiet against the corrupt government”.

Mr Chouhan and Mr Shah are understood to have discussed ways to counter the Opposition, which is also seeking the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s resignation over his alleged involvement in the scam, they said.

Observing that it could not allow the deaths to continue, the Supreme Court had on July 9 had ordered transfer of the probe into all Vyapam scam cases and the deaths allegedly linked to it to CBI.

As many as 46 people associated with the Vyapam scam as accused or witnesses have died under mysterious circumstances. At least, 55 cases have been registered by the MP police and 2,000 accused have been arrested, police said.
