New Delhi, July 11, 2023: Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is liable to be prosecuted and punished for offenses of stalking and molestation, as per the Delhi Police chargesheet. The charge sheet, dated June 13, highlights that Singh’s harassment was repeated and continuing in one of the six cases filed against him.
The Delhi Police has invoked sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 354A (sexual harassment), and 354D (stalking) against Singh.
The chargesheet is based on the investigation involving 108 witnesses, with 15 individuals, including wrestlers, coaches, and referees, supporting the allegations against the BJP MP. If convicted, Singh could face a potential prison sentence of up to five years. The Delhi court has summoned Singh in the matter, noting there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the case. He is directed to appear before the court on July 18.
Initially, seven wrestlers, including a minor, lodged a complaint against Singh’s alleged misconduct, but the minor complainant later withdrew her statement. This development followed a sit-in protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, led by prominent wrestlers demanding Singh’s arrest. The protest lasted until the wrestlers were detained by the police for violating law and order. They suspended their protest after meeting with Union Minister Anurag Thakur, who assured them that the chargesheet in the case would be filed by June 15.
