Ayodhya, 11th June 2023: Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the wrestling body chief accused of sexually assaulting female athletes, will address a massive gathering in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, today. The mega-event is largely interpreted as a show of power by his party, which is under increasing pressure to fire him.
He has been accused of aggressively touching female wrestlers under the guise of testing their breath, groping them, asking unwanted personal inquiries, and demanding sexual favours.
The arrest of the MP, who wields enormous political power in Uttar Pradesh, has been a source of contention. The government has insisted on letting the law run its course.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur promised wrestlers last week that the probe into Singh would be completed by June 15 but had no word of his arrest.
This comes as India’s top wrestlers have been protesting against Singh and demanding his arrest for allegedly sexually harassing seven women athletes.
The meeting with the Sports Minister came just days after the wrestlers demanded an impartial investigation into Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh from Home Minister Amit Shah.
