What happened in Bisara in Dadri Sub Division on 28th September remains a talking point and will, perhaps, perhaps remain so for years. But for a young corporal of the Indian Air Force only shame, utter shame would be the only memory. It was his father and his younger brother who were lynched by a mob of hundred or so, all , reportedly, residents of his own village. This village had been his home, his father’s home , perhaps even of his past several generations. His first foot steps were here. He played foot ball and threw the cricket ball, here, in the rough in this very village. Under the eyes of his playmates, his friends, his father was done to death and his brother maimed by a fiendish mob. Yet this soldier of this country s believes that his India is still the most wonderful country in this planet. Torn and tortured beyond all reason he holds dear this profound belief.
Does he really believe so most people will wonder. He is saying it for the camera others would scoff. These questions are normal reactions even of those who are sickened and filled with anger at the senseless cruelty of it all. Does this man at all mean what he said?. His mien, his visage, his articulation ,his appearance and the clothes he wore made no effort to hide that he is a mussalman He chose not be in his Air Force uniform which would have backed his words better many think .How could he? He is in deep mourning For the next forty days ..
Yet the words that he spoke were not mournful. They did not come out perforce. He was firm, measured and what he said, it was obvious , was from the bottom of his heart. For the last two days this picture has remained with me .For the life of me I could not find a reason for a response that must have shaken every person that heard him ,to his inner core. Then it struck me. When this ghastly incident was related to him where was he? Of Course! He was in his unit. He was with his colleagues in the Air Force. To a man , at that terrible moment , in his life, they stood by him. Men of different faith, community , caste and creed united to stand by his side, suffer his agony, clasp him to their bosoms. They wiped away his tears. They packed his belongings, They put him in the jeep that took him to the airport. They ensured he was never alone. Probably, he is not alone even today. They became his family. They assuaged his sorrow. They means the Air Force including the Air Chief Arup Raha himself.
The Indian Air Force has done the country pride. At this moment shame circles us all round. It envelops the common Indian, the politician, the civil service, the magistracy , the police No one can rid itself of the stink of this shame. Like Lady Macbeth not all the perfumes of Arabia will rid them of this stink. In this shamed moment of our life, thank God for the Indian Air Force.
