What’s the abusive practice of “Breast Ironing” thats becoming a fad amongst British girls

New Delhi: After initially beginning in African countries “Breast ironing” has traveled to western countries and few case have reportedly come into light from Britain after a reputed national daily uncovered the cases of this crucial practice.

Breast Ironing is a practice in which the chest of the girls approaching to the age of puberty is ironed with heated stones or heavy-hard objects to counter the development of private part of the body or retard its growth, it is believed in some countries after the implementation of this practice the girls can be protected from harassment and rape.



The process is extremely painful and can damage tissues of that part, in future there are chances that the girl gone through this practice may not milk feed her child as her milk ducts were also destroyed earlier.

The harmful, illegal and immoral practice is usually carried out by mothers as they believe that it will end the male attention

The United Nations also describes the practice as one of five global under-reported crimes relating to gender-based violence.

“The practice of breast ironing is an emerging issue which voluntary sector organisations working across the African diaspora felt was not receiving enough attention”, read London Borough of Brent report compiled in February 2017.
